Requirements for certification as an International Certified Gambling Counselor-I (ICGC-I)

ICGC counselors must demonstrate a specific number of hours in gambling-specific training, clinical experience treating individuals with a gambling disorder, and successful completion of the Certification Examination for Gambling Counselors.

Education

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent license or certification in a recognized behavioral health field (i.e. psychology, addictions, clinical social work)

Training

30 hours (ICGC-I) of IPGGC-approved gambling-specific training and education

Experience

100* hours (ICGC-I) clinical experience treating individuals with a gambling disorder and/or family members in a board-approved setting.

Evaluations

Consent and evaluations from two co-workers

Supervisor

Consent and evaluation from on-site clinical supervisor.

BACC

Consent and evaluation from Board Approved Clinical Consultant (BACC). A minimum of 4 hours of sessions to be completed with an IPGGC BACC.

*BACC consultation requires a contractual agreement that may also have fees associated.

Details and Definitions

Direct Contact Hours

Minimum of 100 hours as a gambling counselor delivering direct treatment to individuals with problematic or disordered gambling and significant others, in a Board approved setting with an IPGGC Board Approved Clinical Consultant (BACC). This can be fulfilled by 50%- or 125-hours volunteer work experience, the balance being paid experience.

Case Consultation Criteria

Minimum guidelines for approved supervision/consultation should include at least 4 one-hour sessions. IPGGC clinical consultation may be done in person, by phone, by email, or as arranged between consultant and applicant.  Applicant may present properly documented past clinical work with individuals with disordered gambling and their family members for consideration by the IPGGC approved clinical consultant, and if accepted by the BACC (Board Approved Clinical Consultant) and the IPGGC, these hours may be credited toward the 100 experiential hours required for ICGC-I.  These should include a minimum caseload as agreed to with the BACC.  Clinical Consultant guidelines will include reporting forms, case presentation guidelines, and suggested minimum caseloads.

Definitions Related to ICGC-I

Direct contact hours provided to individuals with a gambling disorder and significant others are defined as:

  • Face to face clock hours with gambling clients.
  • Face to face clock hours with individuals with a gambling disorder and/or their families.
  • All hours of documentation or consultation for gambling clients or family member to:
  1. Client chart
  2. E.A.P./employer
  3. Counselor supervisor
  4. Referral agents/other mental health workers court/parole/probation officers
  • Any lengthy telephone interventions (30 min. or more, documented).
  • Assessments of clients for a gambling problem.
  • Preparation of discharge summaries, evaluations and/or aftercare plans for other agencies or care providers.
  • Review of disordered gambling cases to medical or clinical director.
  • Case management services to managed care providers or utilization review for gambling cases.
  • Psycho-educational sessions for individuals with a gambling disorder or their family members.
  • Treatment planning sessions with the treatment team.

Washington

The Gambling Counselor Core Training provides the 30 CE hours required for certification as a Washington State Certified Gambling Counselor (WSCGC), and/or certification through IPGGC. The training includes a 10-hour self-directed portion (Part 1) and a 20-hour live-learning webinar portion (Part 2).

University of Pittsburgh

The University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work has developed an 18 Module, online, self-paced program for the ICGC 30 hour training requirement. It was developed by Jody Bechtold, LCSW, ICGC-II, BACC and includes access to BACC hours as part of enrollment. Perfect for working individuals that want to pursue certification outside of normal working hours. Cost: $599.

MACGH - Vermont & Michigan

The Problem Gambling Essentials for Clinicians is a 10-session, 30-hour course to grow your skills in gambling disorder assessment, treatment, and recovery support.
